Abstract

The surgically created arteriovenous fistula (AVF), first introduced by Cimino and Brescia (1) in collaboration with surgeon Appel in 1966 for chronic hemodialysis, remains the preferred long-term vascular access for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). It provides optimal dialysis adequacy, enhances quality of life, reduces complications, and improves survival rates.
